Outreach and Education
The goal of the SuperSibs! Outreach and Education program is to empower, educate and enable key oncology and pediatric medical and psychosocial partners to work together with us -- to solve the problem of siblings not receiving adequate support. We hope that by helping them integrate sibling awareness into everything they do for families battling pediatric cancer - the brothers and sisters will be able to manage through their journey with strength, courage and hope!
Click Here to see a summary of an independent evaluation that was conducted on the impact of SuperSibs! support to the families in our program. This poster has also been presented and displayed at conferences (see below for a list of the conferences SuperSibs! attends.)
One way that we have been able to provide resources to support these professionals is the development of the SuperSibs! Sibling STAR Kit --- Support, Training, Awareness and Recognition. This toolkit is available for professionals to use to heighten and enhance their “front line” sibling support. This kit provides a complete menu of flexible options, outlines and materials from which to implement appropriate one-time or ongoing sibling support programs. The SuperSibs! Sibling STAR Kit will enable psychosocial and child life professionals to further help these “invisible children”, as appropriate to the child, family, organization and time available. This design was an outgrowth of our national conference presentations and advisor input, highlighting the lack of tools and programming activities to specifically implement effective sibling support at their locations on-site, whether at a hospital, clinic, support organization, or camp. Our best practices focus groups have resulted in outstanding programming, information and resources to now share with professionals nationwide to help “solve the problem together” to help siblings heal.
SuperSibs! has also piloted a revolutionary educator sibling awareness program — TEAM (Teacher Education Awareness Materials) – to ensure that teachers, school nurses and counselors can provide appropriate support for siblings each day at school.
