Why make a Fleece Buddy Blanket?
This is an easy (and not very expensive) way for you, your parents and friends
to spend time together making something to comfort you whenever you need it most! What a great way for them to show how much they love and care about you—by making the “love knots” in this blanket! Of course, include your brother or sister with the knot tying, too!
Here’s what you need:
- Each blanket requires 2 pieces of fleece fabric. The patterns should be whatever design and colors you like! Some suggestions are:
- both sides to be the same
- two different patterns
- two plain colors
- a pattern on one side and a plain color on the other
(this is our favorite!) - Fabric should be at least 40 inches or wider (most are 54 inches)
- Medium Sized – 1 ¾ yards (in both fabrics)
- Larger Sized – 2 yards (in both fabrics)
- Scissors
- Masking Tape or Safety Pins
- A 4”x4” piece of paper to use as a guide to cut the corners
Here’s what to do:
- Choose 2 pieces of fleece to use to make your Buddy Blanket.
- Place the two pieces together with the decorative side facing out – where it can be seen. You can safety pin or place a circle of masking tape between them to keep the fleece in place.
- Cut a 4 inch square out of each of the 4 corners of the pieces of fleece. Do this while they are on top of each other so the sizes are exact.
- Then, cut 4” slits that are 1-2” in width around the entire blanket. Make sure the width is the same so that your fringe is the same.
- Take each of the 2 strips that you cut – and tie a knot in them so that the pieces of fleece are now tied together. (We tie each once, and then again, so they hold tight even after washing) Do this on every side of the blanket. You can have one family member or friend on each side, so this is truly a project that was done TOGETHER!
- Once you tie EVERY pair of strips – you’ll have a beautiful blanket to remind you that family and friends will always be tied together by their love for you!
